Each city has its rich historical story, and the center of this part of Croatia is Zadar. Apart from Kalelarga Street, the church of St. Donatus, the Forum , Zadar is recognizable for its Sea Organ on the western part of the waterfront. It is a unique architectural construction whose sound is influenced by the sea, waves, tides. Next to them, there is Greeting to the Sun, an urban installation that produces an impressive play of light.

There is also Sibenik, a city full of imposing historical fortifications. Sibenik is the city of king Petar Krešimir IV. and is the only city in Croatia that has two monuments under the protection of UNESCO - the fortress of St. Nicholas and St. Jacob.

Northern Dalmatia is also a favorite vacation spot to many yachtsmen who adore Croatian islands, islets, bays and extremely clean sea.

How to get to North Dalmatia

If you have decided to spend your vacation somewhere in Northern Dalmatia, we have prepared tips how to get to Northern Dalmatia. Don’t worry, it is very similar like you are heading to Central Dalmatia.

Thanks to the excellent road and international airports connections with Croatia, it is very easy to get to Northern Dalmatia.

The center of Northern Dalmatia is Zadar, and it’s close to Zadar Airport. If you do not land in Zadar, you can also land at Split Airport, which is 115 kilometers away from Zadar Airport.

If you come from Croatia or neighboring countries, then the best option is to travel by car or bus. Almost every of the Croatian and neighboring cities is connected to the Zadar or Sibenik bus stations. You can choose to travel on the modern Dalmatian highway or the old road (toll free), also full of beautiful rest areas with lookouts.

Except to Zadar airport, you can also land at the airport in Split and travel by car or bus to the desired location in Central Dalmatia.

If you need to go to one of the islands, there are ferry ports Zadar and nearby Sibenik.

Thanks to boat and catamaran lines of the shipping company Jadrolinija (and others) ports are excellently connected with almost all Croatian islands. If you want to go to Ancona, there is a boat line from Zadar ferry to Ancona.

In case you are not coming to Croatia by car, it would be great to rent some transfer so you can go sightseeing in the nearby towns, places, and beaches.

Activities in North Dalmatia

    While traveling along the North Dalmatia you will see some of the most divine nature scenes. Although maybe sometimes overlooked as a holiday destination, the North Dalmatia has so much to offer. Zadar is the heart of the region and home of two extraordinary attractions, the Sea organ and the Sun Salutation. A bit north to Zadar Zrmanja River is situated, one of the most beautiful Croatian and European rivers characterized by intact nature, lush flora and fauna and clear waters. Kayaking and rafting trips on Zrmanja and Krupa rivers are extremely popular and are safe even for children.
    Croatia is a land of thousand islands, and it is impossible to visit them all but visiting Zlarin, a small island with less than 300 inhabitants might be great experience. Sea kayaking tour from Zablace to Zlarin island is recommended as it is the best way to explore the islands. Zlarin is famous for the centuries-old tradition of production of coral jewelry.
     This region is home to three national parks: Paklenica, Kornati islands and Krka waterfalls. National park is an area of exceptionally valuable intact nature covering around 109 km2 of the most beautiful sections of the Krka River and the lower course of the Cikola River. Paklenica National Park is karst river canyon near southern slopes of Velebit. It contains of 2 canyons, Mala and Velika Paklenica but today there is no river flowing through Mala Paklenica. Hiking is the only way to get to know this area as Paklenica has between 150 and 200 km of trails and it is the most visited climbing site in Croatia.
Kornati National Park comprises an archipelago of around 90 amazing islands, islets and reefs thus is often called a ‘’nautical paradise’’. This area is uninhabited, so it is a wild destination for exploring.  If you are interested in the underwater life, then Kornati is the perfect destination for you as Kornati has 850 animal species, 353 species of algae and 3 species of underwater flower plants. Kornati can be visited by your own boat, by boat of one of local boat men or by organized tour from some of the places on the coast. Kornati are like small deserts across the sea, some are white, some are brownish, but you will hardly find some green there.
     North Dalmatia is host of the Garden festival; music events held annually in Tisno from the beginning of July until the end of August. This event attracts visitors from over 40 different countries. As you can see, North Dalmatia is region offering large variety of sightseeing spots, activities, and events so everyone will find something interesting to do and see.
